Integrating Authenticity And Vulnerability Into Our Work Personas With Mike Robbins

Mike Robbins Headshot

The subject of authenticity and vulnerability is a vital one especially, when we place so much focus on building a healthy and happy life. I truly believe that we do ourselves a great disservice when we self-distort for acceptance; it reinforces the idea that we’re not good enough.

Emotional repression is something else that puts our mind and body in an anxious, distressed state and yet, it’s a practice common to all of us. We all avoid being vulnerable out of the fear of judgement, ridicule, or rejection. It says a lot about the level of our trust in our fellow human beings that we would rather hurt ourselves emotionally and mentally than risk being vulnerable and authentic. I think, it’s imperative that we do our part in making the world a safer place with more understanding and less judgement and one way to do that is to embrace our own authenticity and honest emotional expression. In this episode, I talk to Mike Robbins about how we can integrate these elements into our day-to-day life, especially when we are at work, without feeling completely exposed, and in doing so, live more honest lives, raise emotionally intelligent kids, and contribute to building a world conducive to building self-worth and self-confidence.

Shownotes -

  • Which piece of his content (the books, ted talks, all the articles, and the interviews) is Mike most  invested in, to date.
  • As we pursue big goals, we feel the need to bring our ‘A-Game’ but in doing so, we often feel compelled to self-distort, why that’s not the healthy choice to make even if it does pay off in the short run.
  • Despite the insecurities engendered by the pandemic, people are moving towards more purposeful, authentic career choices; is there a way for us to bring all that to our corporate careers so we don’t feel compelled to take unsustainable risks?
  • When we are in our work environment (especially, in a leadership capacity), is there a way for us to make space for our emotions without fearing that it would make us look less ready and qualified for the job?
  • How do we embrace vulnerability without feeling exposed and ashamed? Why it’s important to do that, not just for our own selves but for others as well.
  • The value of intentionality when it comes to personal interactions and life choices. How it helps us nurture and create more secure environments.
  • You have shared a lot of personal stories with your audience that must have taken a lot of courage; what did you learn from those experiences? How did you feel in the moment and after?
  • When our performance is a key metric for inclusion, we are bound to feel judged, how do we create a sense of security and belonging in such spaces?
